Chapter Three

~ Pandora ~

Night came quickly. At least, it felt that way to Pandora. When they’d gotten home from the park, she’d planted herself by the front window, staring out at the street, watching and waiting. The sky had been blue and bright, and then just as quickly, it was black and blank, so cloudy she couldn’t make out the stars.

She vaguely remembered the bright golden haze settling in at dusk, the deep evergreen the leaves on the tree outside the window had grown as the setting sun silhouetted against them, the clanking plates and muted conversation in the other room as everyone sat down for dinner, Jax’s warm hand on her shoulder as he whispered she should join everyone and have something to eat.

But she wasn’t hungry.

She was numb.

She was lost.

Because she’d saved the world.

She’d killed Sam.

She’d done everything she was supposed to do.

And still, it hadn’t been enough.

Still, the titans were excluding her, off deciding her fate, their fate, the world’s fate while she was left in the dark. Still, her father gazed at her as little more than dirt on his shoe that stubbornly refused to be cleaned. Still, she felt villainized, victimized.

And so she waited for the sound of an engine on the road.

Watched for headlights in the distance.

Sat with her head resting on knees that had been pulled flush against her chest, while an endless stream of words flooded through her mind—accusations, orders, doubts, demands, questions. Why? Why? Why?

A soft rumble stopped her cold.

Pandora’s gaze sharpened as two yellow beams flooded the street.

She was at the front door before the car had even pulled to the curb, yanking it open in the same moment the car window began to roll down.

“The director would—”

“I’m coming,” Pandora responded before the voice finished speaking. It took a moment to register that the person driving the car was Susan, the head tracker, a woman she’d seen countless times growing up—usually when she had her nose pressed against her bedroom window, secretly watching Jax receive special training in his backyard while she hid in her shadows, out of sight, out of mind, just…out of everything.

Now, the woman nodded.

But before Pandora could take a step outside, a hand stopped her.

Fingers wrapped around her palm, making her turn.

“Where are you going?” Jax asked softly, gaze flicking to the car on the street.

“To talk to my father,” Pandora told him, tone even, unsure how he’d respond after their bizarre conversation earlier that day. But the angry, possessive, fuming Jax from the park was gone. The boy she loved, the dreamer, the artist, the man who could read her every movement so well, had returned. And his seafoam eyes softened when they met hers, making Pandora aware of the pain that must have been swirling across her irises—a feeling she’d never truly been able to hide from him. His grip relaxed, turning comforting as he gently brushed his thumb over her skin.

“Are you okay?” he asked, concern bringing his thick brows together.

“No,” she confessed with a dark, breathy laugh.
